Beautiful World: Empowers Children To Greatness

Posted on: Tuesday, March 12, 2013

The foundation, Beautiful World hosted a cocktail hour and dinner at the luxurious Liberty Grand, raising funds and bringing awareness to the needs of children abroad who live in sad conditions, some without parental guidance. Our evening started with a media reception where we chatted with Much Music personalities and Toronto fashion designer, Rachel Sin. You will see our photo time below. After the reception, guests sat down to a 5 course meal while being entertained and educated. We asked Founder of Beautiful World Canada, Sara Dunkley what things do we as Canadians take for granted, that children in war ridden countries need…

“They have no mattresses, they sleep on the floor, they have no electricity. In Canada we don’t appreciate our houses, we don’t appreciate our heating, we don’t appreciate our electricity. Even the safety and security here; we leave our houses and we send our children to school or take them out to different places, we know there safe.”

We were also very inspired after speaking with CNN Hero and Founder of Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project, Twesigye Jackson Kajuri who had us thinking about what more we could do as Canadians to help efforts overseas. His charity acts as an advisor to Beautiful World. We were upfront in asking Jackson about why he decided to be associated with Beautiful World…

“If Beautiful World were taking advantage, I wouldn’t be associated. We came up with a mandate and we tell them what the children need to prepare them for a better future. They listen to me because I know the life, and I understand what the children face.”

We then asked him what makes all the work worth it, what is the most rewarding thing about being involved? He proceeded to play a video on his smart phone of children graduating from school with hopes to be whatever they want to be because they have a choice. He said orphaned children had grandparents who died with a wish to see their children educated.

The evening left us thinking about the importance of assistance and support for charities. Beautiful World not only needs money, but they need bodies and hands that are willing to work towards change. The vision of children in mud, covered in flies doesn’t show progress, but watching children in a video march towards their graduation day in their cap and gowns show us where our money and thoughts are going. Just a thought.

World Mastercard Fashion Week: Rachel Sin

Posted on: Sunday, October 28, 2012

Rachel Sin made her World Mastercard Fashion Week debut this season, and all fashion eyes were on her! She didn’t seem nervous as we spoke to her backstage and she didn’t need to be. The studio runway room was packed, and many people were left standing! Rachel Sin has garnered fans with her feminine, modern, sharp style, so fans of the brand were excited to see what she would be presenting. The show started with skirt & pant suits in neutrals, trimmed with gold zippers. We enjoyed lace trimmed pants with tuxedo like blazers, and long knit maxi dresses. One color used that we didn’t see too much of this time on the runway was mid-night blue, but it was used in a few Rachel Sin blazers throughout the show. That color with the strong lines & details in the blazer came across as regal! Rachel hit every episode of a woman’s day. From work to play, Rachel Sin has provided a look for the sharp ‘superwoman’ woman.

Posted on: Sunday, April 29, 2012

Rachel Sin presents a solid, slick collection of sophistication and class with her latest, shown at Fashion Art Toronto (FAT). Canadian recording artist, Cory Lee, opened the show with a live performance setting the tone for a night out on the town! Our favorite dresses hands-down were the shiny black & silver dress (also done in black and gold) and the collared charcoal grey dress. Rachel gave us well-tailored, elegant party pieces designed for the strong, yet feminine woman. Here are some of our favorites below for your viewing pleasure.

Pre-Show Chat with RACHEL SIN!

Posted on: Monday, April 23, 2012

After studying Architecture as a profession, Rachel Sin took her designing knowledge and translated it into textile design, creating some of the most distinctive pieces in Canadian women’s wear. Rachel Sin’s creations are not only gorgeous, but functional and original. It is fitting that Rachel Sin will be showing this week at Fashion Arts Toronto (FAT), Toronto’s alternative fashion week. As we come close to her FAT showing April 25th titled, City Scapes 2012, we had a moment to chat with the designer about her inspiration for her latest collection and what we can expect from the brand in the near future.

What does it mean for a designer like yourself to be showing at FAT this year?

It’s great to be able to celebrate fashion creatively in an environment where the possibilities are unlimited.  This means a lot to designers and artists that are breaking out and do not want to be confined by commercially oriented fashion weeks.  With every idea that we approached the FAT team with, we were responded with a “Yes, that’s a great idea, let’s do it!” This year we are excited to be opening Day 2 with singer Cory Lee and her performance of her new single Fashion Show.

The Alicia Dress

With your latest collection, what is the inspiration or theme?

Reminiscent of the fashions from a Pedro Almodovar film creation, this collection is darkly romantic defining today’s modern style – an appealing contradiction of strength and vulnerability. Almodovar’s protagonist,  and favorite actress, a.k.a Penelope Cruz, inspired a mood board with rich materials including textured lace, faux-fur and shimmering sequins. A feminine neutral toned colour palette consisting of camel, charcoal gray and peach nude elevate the contemporary expression of this collection.  This collection is stunning with evening dresses, fall suiting separates, fitted skirts, sequined dinner pants, and a form-fitting blazer accented on the breast with faux-fur.   Cut-outs, sheer lace, and a falling back-line are distinctive of my work. A sophisticated yet sexy design approach are incorporated into many of the pieces.  Almodovar consistently creates female characters who can do it all.  They can be plain or spectacularly glamorous.  They can be needy and possessive or fiercely self-sufficient.

You’ve created such a strong brand with your designs. As an artist, do you ever feel pressured to out-do yourself?

As a Fashion Designer, you are constantly questioning yourself, it’s hard to step back and take a retrospective look at what you’ve accomplished.  As an artist, you are constantly growing and reinventing yourself, the best part is that you have full control, but it is also a very introspective work.  It’s good to be able to take criticism and feedback, to be realistic and be aware of where you stand.

What new lessons have you learned in preparing for this show?

No matter how much of a perfectionist you are, there are some things that are out of your control.   Breathe and take it one day at a time.

Now that this show is set, what plans do you have for the next few months? You don’t have to spill your secrets…

Pre-fashion show rush, I am just taking it one day at a time!  Post FAT, we will be participating at America’s Next Top Model Live Toronto Shopping event May 4-6 at the Metro Convention Centre.  Also, we’re excited to be hosting a Private Styling and Shopping event, Saturday, May 24th with Roxx Jewels and Sentaler Coats.  This event will take place at Sentaler Showroom at 555 Richmond St and will be an exclusive styling and shopping experience.
